DescriptionThis is the definitive volume on Craig Ellwood, a visionary architect, designer, and tastemaker often called the "California Mies van der Rohe."
This book celebrates and explores the glamour of Ellwood's work, life, myth, and career. Through photographs, primarily of the iconic houses he designed in Southern California during the 1950s and '60s, we see a life of refined decadence, expressed through gorgeous architecture, fast cars, beautiful women, Hollywood style, palm trees, swimming pools, and minimalist design--all in the context of the Southern California postwar building boom.
This volume will appeal to design junkies, architecture buffs, students of modernism, and anyone interested in problem-solving and elegant solutions. Author descriptionMichael Boyd is a landscape, furniture, and architectural designer based in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is the principal of BoydDesign, a consultancy for the restoration and preservation of modernist architecture, and for collecting modern art and design. He is an internationally renowned and published expert on 20th century design and post-war Modernism. Richard Powers has served as principal photographer for over 20 books on design, architecture, and interiors. He is the photographer for Rizzoli's Making House (2017). Ray Kappe is an internationally recognised architect, urban planner, and educator. His work is considered to be an extension of the early Southern California master architects: Wright, Shindler, and Neutra. He is a co-founder of SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. |
